Mesa Arch Sunrise
The Work
Everyone has seen Mesa Arch at sunrise. It is likely the most frequently photographed moment in the American Southwest—and most of those photos look almost identical. The arch glows with radiance. The canyon plunges into the abyss below. In the background, the La Sal Mountains rise majestically. The composition feels familiar even before one arrives at the site.
I was well aware of this, too. And I very nearly excluded this photograph from my “Signature” series precisely because of the motif’s widespread recognition. However, my opinion changed thanks to a certain detail-one I had overlooked until I printed a 40-by-60-inch print for myself. Exactly in the center of the frame stands a rock formation known as “Washerwomen.” That is precisely why I decided to crop the image from both the right and the left, in order to make this specific formation more prominent. I did not focus exclusively on the arch to showcase it in its most beautiful light; my objective was the “Washerwomen”- though without diminishing the beauty of Mesa Arch itself. The winter months-when I visit this place and, with a bit of luck, manage to capture a magnificent sunrise-offer an unforgettable experience. Every shift in color on the La Sal Mountains, every cloud formation, and the unique interplay of shadows emerging at dawn in Buck Canyon combine to make this spot one of the five or seven most beautiful places on our planet. Having this image on my own wall-in the form of a 40-by-60-inch print-causes my thoughts to constantly drift back there; it is like the gentle touch of those past experiences, softly caressing the heart and subtly pushing aside the stress accumulated amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life. As I sit here in my armchair, forgetting the rush of today’s world, I gaze upon Mesa Arch-Washerwomen.
