Where Light Decides
The Work
At the break of dawn, I left my tent and began walking along the Eureka Dunes, covering nearly three miles to reach the edge of the dune field. My backpack weighed about twenty-five pounds, and I had perhaps an hour to stay ahead of the morning sun. In a way, I had to move faster than the light itself — waiting for it to catch me, to graze the edges of the dunes, and to reveal the shapes hidden in darkness.
In the deep silence before sunrise, the dunes seemed to hold their breath. There was a feeling of stillness, but also of tension — the quiet anticipation that comes before the moment I had been waiting for.
Then the first ray of sunlight touched a dune, drawing a single golden line across its form. Moments later, other rays followed, revealing the landscape slowly, ridge by ridge, curve by curve. The sun did not illuminate everything at once; it chose carefully. Some forms were revealed, while others remained hidden in darkness. I began photographing that delicate conversation between what the light touched and what it left untouched.
I titled this photograph Where Light Decides because, in that brief and unforgettable moment, it truly felt as though the light was deciding what I would be allowed to witness.
