Visited Death Valley more than 15 times, I’ve witnessed several desert storms—but the one I captured in this photo was by far the most intense and dangerous of them all. I was standing roughly a mile from the storm wall, and as I listened to the sound it carried across the dunes, my heart began to beat irregularly. The only thing that calmed me enough to stay and take the shot was the direction of the storm. It seemed to pause—then shift—toward the mountain range surrounding the Eureka Dunes.
